NYC - A Quick Visit

Posted by teamharpo on April 6, 2012 at 5:30 PM Comments comments (0)

The team was in the big city for a visit and we knew this one was here but it had moved.  We looked for it on the way back to the train station and found it.

Here is the log for our visit.

POPS - W. 45th St.

Team Harpo was heading back home after a nice dinner and walk in NYC. We tried to find this one several months ago but security was all over the old site so we were unable to give it a good look. We knew it was still operational and looked it up on the smart phone app. We read the new name and information and walked around the block (the park was locked up). We made it to ground zero and located the container. We signed the log and put it back. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

April Fools Caching

Posted by teamharpo on April 1, 2012 at 8:25 PM Comments comments (0)

It is April 1 and the team is out to look for our 900th find.  We have established a goal to reach 1000th finds this year and as we get the opportunities to Geocache we are taking each one to find as many as possible.  So the team is out looking today in Long Beach along the boardwalk.  We haven't been here so we find a spot to park and begin our quest.  We ended up finding 10 today including the 900th.

Here are the logs of the gecocaches that we found today:

Surf's Up

Team Harpo is out today looking to find our 900th cache. This is the first one of the day that we located. We parked nearby and walked on the boardwalk looking for the caches along the path. We were successful with this one and we signed the log. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

Polar Bear Beach

Team Harpo is out today looking to find our 900th cache. This is 2 of 10 for the day. We located this and we signed the log. We continued down the boardwalk before heading back to the car. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

It's Over in the Land of Under

Team Harpo is out today looking to find our 900th cache. This is 3 of 10 for the day. It was nice to find this one as it was a bit easier. It is amazing what salt spray from the ocean can do to unpainted, ungalvanized metal. It really tears it apart; rusting it with impunity. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

Geocache Island

Team Harpo is out today looking to find our 900th cache. This is 4 of 10 for the day. We walked over to this one and had to play it cool while we watched 4 guys playing volleyball and another person was on the beach hanging out. We thought it was a bit chilly on the beach today to hang out on the sand but to each their own I guess. We found the container and signed the log. This was a lot of fun and a good hide. It might be weird when the sand isn't there to stand on in the summer. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

Long Beach Boardwalk

Team Harpo is out today looking to find our 900th cache. This is 5 of 10 for the day. After all the other types we found along the board walk today this one was a bit different. I am glad we are here today when the beach is not so crowded because it would be weird to explain what we were doing under there. We located the container and we signed the log. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

The Beginning or the End?

Team Harpo is out today looking to find our 900th cache. This is 6 of 10 for the day. We had to bypass this one because when we arrived there were 2 people working out. We headed down the boardwalk to find a couple more caches and on the way back we stopped here again. When we got here the second time there were 3 more people stretching for a run down the boardwalk. We waited them out and looked for the cache. We signed the log and put the cache back in the hiding spot. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

TRC, Cache to Eagle #4

Team Harpo is out today looking to find our 900th cache. This is 7 of 10 for the day and this IS our 900th find! We stopped at the preserve and looked for the few new ones here that we have not found yet. As part of our 900th find we are releasing a new TB for us, one that we received for finding another geocache related to the Boy Scouts. The Boy Scouts have been a part of our lives for many years and we still have a troop and are still involved. One of us is a Scoutmaster and Eagle Scout and the other is a ASM and we have great times with our troop. We signed the log and sent our TB on its way. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

Going for the Gold #23

Team Harpo is out today looking to find our 900th cache. This is 8 of 10 for the day and this is the 901st find. We stopped at the preserve and looked for the few new ones here that we have not found yet. We located the hiding spot and we signed the log. Congratulations to all the Gold Award recipients and the many more that will follow. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

BK-7 Pier Pick-up

Team Harpo is out today looking to find our 900th cache. This is 9 of 10 for the day and this is the 902nd find. Since we were already here we made the entire loop and picked up this one at the Pier. Since we were here late there wasn't anyone on the pier today. We found the clever hiding spot and signed the log. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

Point Lookout West Marina Micro

Team Harpo is out today looking to find our 900th cache. This is 10 of 10 for the day and this is the 903rd find. After leaving the preserve we headed back to Long Beach and picked this one up at the marina. We parked right near the cache and located the hiding spot and signed the log. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

Out Like a Lamb

It’s the last day of March and Team Harpo is out to get closer to our goal for this year.  So we look for some local caches and we wind up finding nine.  It was a nice and although it was cool the weather was clear and sunny.

Here are the logs of the caches we found:

LI History: Roosevelt Raceway

Team Harpo found this today - 1 of 9 for the day. We had a free day and it wasn't great weather but it was good enough to geocache. We drove up to this one after turning on the GPSr. We were stopping to check where the closest Geocaches were and this one was very close (about 200 feet). So we drove over and parked next to it. We found it and signed the log. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

www.teamharpo.com

LI History: Nunley's Carousel

Team Harpo found this today - 2 of 9 for the day. We drove over to the carousel to look for the cache. We found it quickly enough and went in to look at the carousel and read about the history. We signed the log and put the cache back in its hiding spot. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

TGWs LDS Cache #2

Team Harpofound this today - 3 of 9 for the day. We checked all the doors before locating the cache. I guess the GPSr needed us to check everything. We signed the log and put the cache back in its hiding spot. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

A Holly Cache

Team Harpo found this today - 4 of 9 for the day. We are driving around today looking for some geocaches that are on the GPSr. We located this one and found the hiding spot. We signed the log and put the cache back. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

www.teamharpo.com

Merrick Camp Grounds

Team Harpo found this today - 5 of 9 for the day. We have never been in this neighborhood and if we weren't looking for this geocache we may have never been here. We found the cache and couldn't open the cache to sign the log. It seems to have been crushed and we were unable to open one end the the other end the log was sticking out but no way to slide it out. After we put it back we toured the neighborhood looking at all the tiny roads and houses. Thanks for bringing us here. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

Soar with an Eagle #1 TRCBSA

Team Harpo found this today - 6 of 9 for the day. Driving through the area to pick up this one and we parked nearby and used the quiet to find the container. We signed the log and moved along to find another. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

MF #19 - Got Milk?

Team Harpo found this today - 7 of 9 for the day. We parked next door to get a drink and then drove down the road to look for a cache, not this one. The other cache has been missing for a while so we came back to this one and parked closer to it. We didn't know we were so close to this 3 minutes ago. So we admired the cow and signed the log. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

Gone Shopping Series #1

Team Harpo found this today - 8 of 9 for the day. So we are on the way to see a friend and we pulled in to park near GZ but were beaten to the spot by a shopper. Of all the places to park with many spots open this person parks right there? So anyway, we park and look for the cache and sign the log. Moving on. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

Get Out There #2

Team Harpo found this today - 9 of 9 for the day. The lot was empty today and we found the hiding spot and we could see the container from the car. We grabbed it and we signed the log. We thought it was a good spot for one of the TBs we had with us so we dropped it off here. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

NYC Caching and Nighttime on Long Island

Posted by teamharpo on March 24, 2012 at 3:50 PM Comments comments (98)

We had to head to the city to get a few items and we brought the GPSr with us to look for some caches before having to return home.  We had just a few hours so after we finished shopping in Midtown we looked for some caches along the High Line and the Hudson River after a nice lunch. The High Line was busy as it usually is in the great weather so it made things difficult but we did succeed. After lunch we headed toward the river and searched for a few more before heading to Penn Station and the ride home.  After the party we attended in the late afternoon, we did some night caching and located a few more caches in the neighborhood.

Here are the logs of the caches we found:

Beam me up Scotty

Team Harpo took the train in to the City for a couple of things and we brought along the GPSr to see if we could find some geocaches. We located this one near the High Line and it is our first find of the day. Nice location and we found it after reading the description carefully the second time. We missed a key item when we read it the first time. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

I'm 19 and High!

Team Harpo was looking around the city for a few caches today. We found this one after almost giving up on it. We were just discussing lunch when one team member decided to check one more place before we left and came up with the cache. Lucky for us a small Parks Department "truck" pulled up right next to us. The driver got out which gave us some cover to rehide the cache without anyone noticing. Thanks for the cache, cheers!

Out of the the Frying Pan into the Fire

Team Harpo just had lunch so on the way back to the train station we decided to try our luck along the river to find a few caches. We came across this one and we located the hiding spot and we signed the log. This is 3 of 9 for the day. It wasn't that busy but we did have to be stealthy. We placed it back in the location and went further up river. Thanks for the cache, cheers!

Where to Sit?

Team Harpo was headed North to the train station and along the way we grabbed a few geocaches along the river. This is a great spot and we were stumped for a short while because we thought we had it but didn't come up with the container. So we tried again and were able to locate it that time. We did sit in most of the chairs. We signed the log and put it back. This is number 4 of 9 today. Thanks for the cache, cheers!

Word from the wise!

Team Harpo is doing a few night caches, and this is a park and grab so it should be easy, yeah right. We found it with no problem however, we dropped the log book in the car between the seat and the console and had to find it and "dig" it out. We drove away from the cache site and parked somewhere else so we could maneuver the log out from where it fell. We managed to get that done so we could sign the log. We drove back to the hiding spot and put it back. Thanks for the cache. Number 7of 9 for today, cheers!

sandpbles 2K~ A friend of Lees!

Team Harpo is doing a few night caches. We found it without a problem and we signed the log. I got out of the car to put it back but someone was sitting on the bench outside looking right at me. So, we got back in the car and headed on to find another cache and we would bring this one back in 10 minutes or so. We found the other cache and when we came back here the coast was clear and we put the container back. Thanks for the cache. Number 8 of 9 for today, cheers!

Heros

Team Harpo is doing a few night caches and this is the last one for the day. We located the hiding spot easily but had to wait out a few people to clear out before grabbing the cache. We signed the log and put it back with out a problem. We had the 2k Friend cache with us as well for a visit. Thanks for the cache. Number 9 of 9 for today, cheers!

March Weekend

Posted by teamharpo on March 18, 2012 at 3:30 PM Comments comments (0)

We are on a free weekend and the team decided we needed to put out a Travel Bug that we picked up last weekend that is in a race.  So we are out today at an area we haven’t been before to look for some geocaches on the property.  The Francis T. Purcell Preserve is a property owned by Nassau County and is very close to the home of the New York Islanders at the Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum.  The park is interesting as it has no amenities although it has trails that are used by bird watchers, motor bikes and ATVs and your occasional homeless person camps here.  We had a nice walk in the park none-the-less though.

Here are the logs of the caches we found today:

FTP 1

Team Harpo found this today. We were looking for a place for a TB that is in a race. We heard about the homeless guy that lives here and decided to find another place to bring the TB. However, since we were here we looked for all the caches here.

Located this one after telling the man with his 2 sons and dirt bikes that we weren't with the DEC but were Geocaching instead. We put it back after signing the log and moved on to the others. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

FTP 2

Team Harpo found this today. We were looking for a place for a TB that is in a race. We heard about the homeless guy that lives here and decided to find another place to bring the TB. However, since we were here we looked for all the caches here.

We followed the road and hit the right spot. We found it without much problem and we signed the log. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

FTP 4 Cito Cache

FTP 3

Team Harpo found this today. After finding the caches in the park we looked for this one. It was the hardest one and we thought we were going to have a DNF instead. We signed the log and headed on our way. Thanks for the cache, cheers!

Marine Corps Birthday

Team Harpo found this looking for a spot that we could drop off a TB that is in a race. This one fit the bill. We hope someone picks up the TB and helps it on its way to win the race!

There was a new log and it even had today's date on it. Thanks for the cache, it was right where it said it was.

Circus Train

Team Harpo finally found this one. We were here a while ago but were unable to locate it. We were much more successful today, maybe because the houses that were across the street are not there any longer. They are building some new condos so we were a little more relaxed today knowing we wouldn't be spied on.

Thanks for the cache, cheers.

After Camping Caching

Posted by teamharpo on March 11, 2012 at 3:15 PM Comments comments (0)

Team Harpo was camping nearby with our troop so before we head back we take some time to find some geocaches.  We haven’t found any in this area yet so we head down the road to see if there are some on the local roads that are not too far from the car.  We found a bunch before we got hungry and a few after we ate as well.  Eight was the total for the day and we noticed there are a bunch on the trails in this area so maybe we will be back to search for those someday in the future.

Here are the logs of the caches we found:

Caching at a DEC Property

Posted by teamharpo on March 4, 2012 at 9:05 PM Comments comments (0)

Team Harpo had to get the NYS DEC permit to access the property and carry the form with us (for each person) in case we got stopped by the DEC cops.  It is a managed land and access is by permit and a parking permit.  The permits are free and when one fills it out and sends it in, it is instantly activated. Years ago we would have had to send it in via mail and then wait for it to come back to us and then we had to be in the mood to go hiking in the woods to look for these particular caches and well, that took too much planning.  The “instant permit” is much better and it took about 5 minutes to finish.  Thank you Department of Environmental Conservation! We located almost all of the caches in the park on our route on the trails.  We marked the car just in case we got “confused” and had to find our way out. We had a great time and the weather was great.

Here are the logs of the caches we found today:

Mason General

Team Harpo got the FREE NYS DEC "instant permit" and headed out to geocache for the afternoon. This is the first time we have been on this property and we did make the most of it today.

This is the first cache we found today out of 17. This is a great preserve with very few people to bump into during the hunt! We had a great time and the weather was fantastic. We found this one easily enough, thank for the cache, cheers.

This is our 4 find of 17 today. This is a great preserve with very few people to bump into during the hunt! As we approached this one we saw a red tail hawk up on the power tower and we were 2 towers away. Well, he moved once we moved another 30 feet. At least we did get one picture of it. Great hiding spot, I walked right past it. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

Branching Out

Team Harpo got the FREE NYS DEC "instant permit" and headed out to geocache for the afternoon. This is the first time we have been on this property and we did make the most of it today.

This is our 5 find of 17 today. This is a great preserve with very few people to bump into during the hunt! After leaving "Wrong County" we saw the red tail hawk that we saw just minutes before on the power tower. Only this time it was on the lower utility pole. He saw us coming again and he took off from its perch and flew into the woods. We did get one more picture of it. We own a cache with the same name in Nassau County. We located this one without much problem and signed the log. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

This is our 10th find of 17 today. We are meandering through the preserve following all the paths and locating the caches. It is always interesting to see the changes that occur after a fire in the wilderness. Although it looks devestating to us, it has helped spawn new pine trees among the underbrush. We located the cache and we signed the log. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

This is our 15th find of 17 today. After crossing the road we wandered into the plain and started heading to GZ. It is a good thing we are here in the winter (even though it hasn't been much of one this year.) We eventually find the right spot and then find the tube (you must be really tall!) We signed the log and placed it back. On the way out we were surprised by a dog and he was surprised as well. He ran off to find his owner and we tried to locate the road! Thanks for the cache, cheers.

Lets play soccer!!

Team Harpo spent most of the day at the Edgewood Preserve and then on the way home we stopped to find our friend's geocache.

This is our 17th find of 17 today. We pulled up right next to it and the GPSr stated 4 feet. The clue made us look at something else but we checked again and located the hiding spot. We signed the log and admired the patch. We head home to log all the finds. Thanks for the cache, cheers.

The weather this winter has been mild and we are out again to find some more geocaches to reach the 1000th find. We were unlucky with a few today and only come away with a couple.  We should have better luck next time.

Here are the logs of the geocaches we found:

From Adaline to Zebulon

A very interesting place for a cemetery. Team Harpo found this and we signed the log and put it back. Thank you for bringing us here. Cheers.

Skiing and Caching

Posted by teamharpo on February 4, 2012 at 9:50 PM Comments comments (0)

Our Boy Scout troop went skiing this weekend and we were with our friends who also geocache.  Once we were done with skiing we were heading home AFTER we found some geocaches.  We stayed the night in Connecticut and none of us had found a cache in this state so we at least had to go back there to find one, being so close.  It was a very fun way to spend the afternoon trying to be the first of the group to find the hidden spots.

Here are the logs of the geocaches we found:

Apres Ski

Team Harpo was skiing at Thunder Ridge with our Boy Scout troop. A few of us geocache so we went looking for a few on the way home. This is the first we found today after skiing and snowbaording with our Scouting friends. Thanks for the cache, cheers.
